What numerology is, and how to use it well
Numerology turns the letters of your name and the digits of your birth date into numbers, then reads each number as a tendency, strength or lesson. The most common system today is the Pythagorean one, usually linked to the ancient Greek mathematician Pythagoras, although that historical link is still debated.
What it calculates
There are two inputs. Your birth date gives numbers about your journey, such as the life path number. Your full birth name gives numbers about how you express yourself and what you want: the expression, soul urge and personality numbers.
- Life path: the direction and big lessons of your life.
- Expression: your talents and how you show them.
- Soul urge: what you truly want inside.
- Personality: the impression others get of you.
What science says
There is currently no scientific evidence that the numbers in a name or birth date predict the future. One reason readings often feel accurate is the Barnum effect: descriptions general enough will fit almost anyone. So numerology is best treated as a tool for reflection rather than a measurement.
How to use it well
- Treat it as a mirror, not a verdict. Numbers suggest tendencies. The decisions are yours.
- Check it against your own experience. Keep what rings true and drop what does not.
- Do not use it for big decisions about health, money or law.
- Do not label other people. One number never says who someone is.
